Hello PanoPeople!!

Summer is passing by so quickly, another season is starting soon.. it’s time for an official announcement.

After more than 5 years and 50 nights, Panoplie has decided to call it quits: Panoplie Italian Nights V will remain/stay as the closing event of this adventure.

This post to explain you the decision in the most transparent way, as usual.

Believe me, it has not been an easy decision, but there was no way to go on.

First of all because, as you know, this is not a job, but a pure passion: this means, amongst others, that resources are limited, not only in terms of money, but also of time, energy..

But the most important reason is another: when Panoplie has been created, Luxembourg had just a couple of concert venues, and not so many gigs around: people was demanding live music a lot.

Nowadays, the offer of live music has exploded, in the Grand-Duchy: lots of venues, tons of concerts.. quite often even too many!

I’m obviously happy of this development, but it’s clear that it doesn’t leave much space to a no-profit association and its small events.

Time to say goodbye, then, and time to say thank you.

First of all, thank you Robert and Muriel, for creating Panoplie, and thank you “Panoplie Team”, all the other friends who helped out through the years..

Second, big thanks to all the artists, for their art, their hard work, their long journeys..

And also thanks to their teams of booking, tour managers, sound techs..

More big thanks to the venues which hosted our events, and their staff: Fred, Manu, Serginho, Marc..

Last but not least, thank you, PanoPeople: special events need a special public..

Hello PanoPeople!!

Panoplie Italian Nights V are getting nearer, little more than one month.. ready?

We have news for you.. one bad, and one good.
Let's start from the bad one: Roberto Angelini and Francesco Forni have withdrawn from the festival. Too bad.. for them! ;)
The good one is that, at their place, we'll have one of the most interesting young singers of Italian indie-pop: Denise!!

Her debut album is a blissful collection of dreamy enchanting melodies, and she perfectly fits between Athebustop and Perturbazione.

We can tell you we should not have too many acts, probably just 4, 2 par night.
But.. 4 really great ones!!
We say we're preparing a festival with 4 headliners.. and you will agree, I'm sure!!

Panoplie Italian Nights.. a 5 years' history!!

Hello PanoPeople!!

Like we said, we're working hard, these days, on PIN V.

Incredible for us to think that it's already the 5th year of our festival.. it seems yesterday, when this small association, already organising big events, started dreaming about a bigger one: a 2-days festival, to close the season with!
It sounded like a crazy dream, at the beginning, but then.. it took form!

We managed to organise the first one, its success brought to a second the year after.. and it went on until now!
In the coming days we'll post a few videos of the history of PIN.. check this blog!

First big piece of new is the location: the second night of PIN V will take place at our beloved d:qliq, but the first.. will be at Exit07!!
Another wonderful venue, bigger than d:qliq, where we already took Calibro 35 to play in the past, with great pleasure and success.
We already thought of splitting PIN between the two venues last year, this year it's done, and.. in the end we really needed it!

Why? Because the line-up of this year is.. something special!
We can't announce it, but believe us, it's gonna be an incredible PIN V!!

Hello PanoPeople!!

Quite a long time you haven't been getting news from Panoplie, isn't it?
Well, here we are: we didn't disappear!! And we will go on bringing you great live music in Luxembourg, you can still count on us.
We have only decided to.. slow down a bit, meaning that we want to organise less events, but bigger ones!!
This mail to explain you the situation in the most transparent way, as usual.

During the first 4 years of Panoplie, we have organised nearly 50 events: it has been great, but it really wasn't possible to go on like that.
First of all because, as you know, this is not a job, for us, but a pure passion: this means, amongst others, that our resources are limited, not only in terms of money, but also of time, energy..
But the most important reason is another: when we created Panoplie, Luxembourg had just a couple of concert venues, and not so many gigs around, normally.
People was demanding live music a lot, so it was the right situation to organise, in average, one event par month.
Nowadays, the offer of live music has exploded, in the Grand-Duchy: lots of venues, tons of concerts.. sometimes even too many!
Good example can be last November 18th: Midlake & John Grant at den Atelier, Gaëtan Roussel at Rockhal, Giardini di Mirò at d:qliq.. plus another couple in smaller places! It was really hard to know where to go, and in the end all of the gigs suffered a bit from this.
We obviously are happy of this development, but it forces us to focus our energies.

What will be the future of Panoplie, then?
We will continue to organise Panoplie Italian Nights (our yearly festival, in June), and add to this a couple of events par year.

And this is the good occasion to announce.. PANOPLIE ITALIAN NIGHTS V !!
The 5th edition will take place at Exit07 (Friday, June 10th) and d:qliq (Saturday, June 11th): note it on your new agenda!!
We can't yet tell you the line-up, but.. IT'S GONNA BE HUGE.

We'll let you know more soon, through this mailing list, as well as this blog.

Panoplie Italian Nights IV: thank you all!!

Hello PanoPeople!!

This incredible weekend has gone.. and I'm really happy and really tired!! Let me tell you, sincerely: this has been one of the 5 or 6 best events of Panoplie history!I couldn't help finding the time to write this, to thank you all for two magic nights.

First of all, thanks to the artists: all shows have been great, putting d:qliq on fire, and also the backstage was really warm and friendly.

Then, thanks to d:qliq team: Panoplie events wouldn't be the same without such a great staff working on it!

Speaking of working, I need to thank the friends who work with me at these events: it's lots of work, which also means missing a good part of the concerts.

Last but not least, a huge thanks to the public: the two nights have been really hot thanks to the enthusiastic crowd!

I have to say it has been a great success: over the two nights, nearly 250 tickets sold!

I think we have managed, again, to give a great view on the surprising Italian indie scene.

Here we are to present you the headliners of Panoplie Italian Nights IV:
Julie's Haircut!!

Active since 1994, Julie’s Haircut is a six piece collective from northern Italy.

Their debut album Fever in the funk house (Gammapop, 1999), a strange mixture of garage rock, noisy psychedelia and pop melodies was hailed at by the Italian critics as one of the best debuts in Italian indie rock.

The follow-up Stars never looked so bright (Gammapop, 2001) mixed these elements with a more soulful approach, mirroring the love for 60’s black music nurtured by the band.

In 2003, after switching to Homesleep Records Julie’s Haircut released their third album Adult situations, the first to be internationally distributed. Here, melody and odd psychedelia mingle in a more personal way, providing their best work to date.

By 2005 the music of Julie’s Haircut has moved forward towards more experimental grounds, focusing on improv and sound research, without losing touch with the groove that characterized their music since day one. The result is their fourth album After dark, my sweet (Homesleep, 2006), featuring former Spacemen 3 Sonic Boom, acclaimed as one of the best alternative Italian albums of the year.

In 2006 they also functioned as “sound carriers” for an Italian performance of former Can singer Damo Suzuki, thus entering the Damo Suzuki Network and consolidating a warm relationship with the japanese/german artist.

In 2009 their latest, double album Our Secret Ceremony is released by A Silent Place.

They participated with success to Rockhal's Sonic Visions Festival last winter, but a set of 30 minutes is not enough for them to make you discover their universe..
So, come and see them for a looooong set next Saturday, May 29th, at d:qliq!!

After a couple of days of break, we're back with more info on Panoplie Italian Nights IV.
We told you about the whole line-up of Friday, May 28th, so let's get to Saturday, May 29th!

The second night of PIN IV will be started by one of the hottest young (20/21yo) bands from Italy:
Heike Has The Giggles!!

Heike has the giggles and guess what? it's gonna make you smile too!!!

HHTG is an italian trio formed in 2007. Their music is a poppy punk rock with an energetic and catchy attitude. Emanuela Drei's surprising vocals support her spiky guitar riffs, while the fast drumming of Guido Casadio keeps the pace up and Matteo Grandi's bass provides the essential groove.

Like a young PJ Harvey singing with the Arctic Monkeys, HHTG is a live act hard to ignore. As well as a big string of headline solo shows they also shared important Italian stages with some great artists including: The Wombats (Estragon, Bologna), Glasvegas (Bronson, Ravenna), Tricky (Vox Club, Modena), The Futureheads (Bronson, Ravenna) Pete & The Pirates (Spazio211, Torino) and Look See Proof (Casa 139, Milano).
A recent concert of HHTG in Bologna has been followed by a dj-set of.. Franz Ferdinand's leader Alex Kapranos!

They have been invited to many festivals such as Canadian Music Week (2009, Toronto, CAN), Eurosonic Noorderslag (2010, Groningen, NL), Sziget Festival (2008, Budapest, HU), Liverpool Sound City (2010, Liverpool, UK), Walk The Line (2010, The Hague, NL), All2GetherNow (2009, Berlin, GER), Sonic Visions (2009, Rockhal LUX) and Italia Wave Love Festival (2008-2009, Livorno, IT).

Their debut album Sh! was released in February 2010 on the Italian indie label Kitano.

After Roberto Angelini, My Awesome Mixtape and FrankSentUs, it's time to tell you about the last attraction of the first night of PIN IV:
Francesco Assenza!!

He comes from Roma, and he's somehow linked to Roberto and FrankSentUs' Sytem Error, having shared the stage of Il Locale with them, at the time as the singer of a rock band.
Years have passed, and Francesco has been living for a while in Berlin, and has become a successful dj.

He's part of a really interesting label, Sleep is Commercial, which has recently released two compilations on free download on the web.

After Roberto Angelini, it's the time for another comeback to the stage of d:qliq: My Awesome Mixtape!!

And, after two posts for Bob, it's now the time for two concerning MAM: today, space to their bio, tomorrow, a few clips.

A wollen fabric heart pinned on a t-shirt, a marked geeky-nerd attitude is what make My Awesome Mixtape unique of its kind... Five guys with a mission: "Make your heart beat and your hands clap in time". It all started in a room surrounded by a wonderful bolognese panorama similar to the darkest and most gothic Edgar Allan Poe's settings... Here is where MAM are born and grew up with their "Catchy Geek Pop", something totally different from the Poe's landscape! Friendly, Happy, Fresh, Young (as the age of the band members) the my awesome mixtape songs are certainly inspired to the Anticon Scene (why?, themselves ...most of all), Suburban Kids with Biblical Name, The Faint, Tender Forever and the Blow. What will happen next?! That's basically unknown, apart from spreading the Nerd Word all over europe and the entire world.

MAM's story starts, like that of many other bands, in their bedroom.

That’s where, at the tail end of 2006, Maolo, Checco and Bebo – three spritely Bolognese regaz – half-jokingly start making music. Mixing and matching their favourite styles, they end up generating an original mix of indie rock, hip hop and electronica, the kind you cannot fail to dance to.

In the space of a few months, the band’s first songs become the talk of the town, and soon enough they are hailed everywhere as Italy’s next big thing. At that point, leaving the bedroom to go out and play with the big kids is almost mandatory. After a few changes in line-up and solo experiments, MAMe become a fivesome: Maolo Torreggiani, Andrea Mancin, Andrea Sologni, Alessandro Scagliarini and Federico Spadoni. Their first album, titled My Lonely and Sad Waterloo, is published on September 8th 2007.

Upon the album’s release, the band has already played in half the country’s live venues, and tries successfully to go abroad and export their music in the rest of Europe. At the end of 2008, MAM’s Neverending Tour will have lined up a smashing 158 live gigs, and gained the band an award as Best Live Band of the season at the annual Meeting of Independent Labels in Faenza.

That’s not the end of it. MAM’s participation in a compilation sponsored by Mercedes-Benz, the special guest appearance in the ensemble video for La nuova musica italiana by Italian hardcore sensations Linea77, and the re-release of “My Lonely And Sad Waterloo” in Germany, and in Japan, start paving the way for a new album, scheduled for release in the fall of 2009.

How Could a Village Turn Into a Town, their second album, has been released in Italy and in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Recorded byBruno Germano of Settlefish, the album marks a new progression in My Awesome Mixtape’s artistic growth. Composed, arranged and played as a team effort, it matches its predecessor’s freshness with a newfound maturity and awareness in handling and shaping sound.

The album was preceded in May 2009 by the Other Houses EP, issued in double format, digital and coloured cassette tape (for a total of 168 numbered copies). The EP was accompanied by two live videos, made byOpificio Ciclope for Italian web TV Pronti al peggio, and contain three new songs(two of which will not be made available anywhere else), as well as two remixes by hot items of the Italian club scene Congorock and Peluche (Dariella of hip hop band Amari and Matteo Lavagna of Disco Drive).

With a new and improved line-up, once again a five-piece but without guitars, (its members are Maolo Torreggiani, Andrea Mancin, Andrea Suriani, Alessandro Scagliarini and Federico Spadoni), My Awesome Mixtape made their comeback on the Italian stage, and they hust ended their fourth European tour.

Roberto's new live project is fascinating: a SoloLive!

All alone on stage, a real one-man-band: with acoustic guitar, lapsteel, keyboards, theremin, didjeridoo.. playing loops, creating layers.. taking you somewhere else, on the wings of his songs.

But there's much more, to this show.

Roberto's live goes along together with the wonderful animation videos of B5 association.

Panoplie Italian Nights IV will be opened, on Friday, May 28th, by a great comeback to Luxembourg:

Roberto Angelini!!

We probably don't need to tell you much about this talented singer/songwriter/guitar player from Roma.

It will be his 4th time playing at d:qliq in 3 years and a half.. but nearly 2 years and a half since last one!

First time was in December 2006 with Rodrigo d'Erasmo (at present, Afterhours' violin) for their Pong Moon tribute to Nick Drake: amazing how hot an acoustic set can be!

We will youtube soon (finally!) a couple of videos from that unforgettable night.

Second time, in June 2007, for the first PIN: another amazing acoustic set, this time all alone.

Here you have one of the highest moments of his set.

Third one, he joined Massimo Giangrande band on lapsteel, on February 2008.

And.. you know what? That time is was Roberto who proposed to come, and even paid his flight!! Clear proof of the special link between him and Luxembourg..

Again, here a video of the concert.

Since then, he has released an incredible album, La vista concessa, definitely one of the best Italian indie cds of 2009.

This time, he will be back to d:qliq with a very special show: SoloLive!

Big news: PANOPLIE ITALIAN NIGHTS IV !!!

Hello PanoPeople!!

As we told you, we are working on Panoplie events until summertime.

Like we said, there will be less events.. but bigger ones!

It doesn't mean at all that we will do less, just that we want to focus our energies: less quantity, more quality, we might say?

Moreover, apart from "public" events, there will be more "private" ones:

house concerts.

That means bringing artists to play live, more or less acoustic, in a house.

With a sound system, a house can be a better place to gather a small public, 20/30 people max, for an intimate gig and a nice dinner, also with the artist.

We will keep you informed of these events, too.

Now, let's get to the big announcement of the day.

As usual, right before summer, our yearly festival will take place at d:qliq.

Two days of Italian music, food, drinks..

Strange as it might seem, we already got to its 4th edition!

Can't stop thinking about last night: it has been amazing!!

We don't have too many images, unfortunately.. but at least a nice video!

What a night, last night..

.. we really need to thank everybody!!

First of all, the great and hot crowd: a sold-out always is a satisfaction, but we have rarely seen such an enthusiastic public!

Then, obviously, d:qliq staff, nice as always, and even warmer than usual!

Naif and her band, who started the night with a really nice gig, starting to make people dance..

Our friend Kustonbeater, who has become Calibro 35's Luxembourg official DJ, making people dance as usual until late night..

And, most of all, to the great Calibro 35!!

We really love them, artistically but also personally, you probably knew..

It was a sort of 2nd birthday of the band: 2 years since their very concert, which took place at d:qliq..

After 2 years this band, born as a fun-side-project, has become one of the most interesting emerging bands from Italy, and definitely one of the best live acts!

And, in a few weeks.. their new cd is being released!

We have had the honour of a preview.. pay attention, cuz it's AWESOME!!

It'll soon be presented, also at Sentieri Sonori: we'll tell you more soon, stay tuned.

We couldn't dream anything better for the comeback of Panoplie after our sabbatic semester..

And we're already working on the coming events!

We can already tell you there's gonna be less events.. but bigger ones!

The offer of live music in Luxembourg is growing bigger and bigger, so we have decided to focus our energies: we're sure you won't be disappointed!!

Two more days, and our first event of 2010 will finally take place.

This Saturday, at d:qliq, the comeback of Calibro 35, with Naif as opening act and Kustonbeater mixing for the aftershow party!!

We don't need to tell you much about Calibro 35.. do we?

On the other side, we want to tell you a bit more about the opening act: Naif!

Christine Naif Hérin's voice is light and intense, her songs fascinating, her live sets full of energy..

She was born in 1981 in Val d'Aosta, French-speaking northwestern part of Italy, and she self-taught to play piano, guitar and bass, starting to write songs since very young.

In 2002, she created her recording studio, giving an important impulse to her musical activity.

Since then, she has self-produced 6 cds (also recording with USA producer Tommy Barbarella and Sommy Thompson and Michael Bland, all former members of Prince's New Power Generation), played live throughout Europe (amongst others, operning for Lauryn Hill, duetting with Maceo Parker..), participated to different festival (also winning a few critics' prizes)..

Nowadays, while Italian medias and public talk more and more about her, she's presenting her cd Faites du bruit around Europe, also playing at Boule Noire in Paris and at Taratata.

Hello PanoPeople!!

The new year's approaching, and with it.. Panoplie's comeback!!

We're working on the agenda until next summer: get ready for a few really great event!!

News are already circulating about the first one.. let's announce it officially.

The first event after our sabbatic semester

will take place at d:qliq, on January 16th.

We're happy and proud to welcome back to Luxembourg

the great CALIBRO 35!!

Their first gig ever took place at d:qliq, with Lombroso, on January 25th, 2007.. did we ever tell you? ;)

They came back at Exit07 last March, with Joy as a support act, and it was another great success.. we needed them to come back!!

And, by the way, the band is really happy, too, sincerely.

This time, support act will be Naif Hérin, singer/songwriter from Val d'Aosta, Italy, who's presenting her debut album, being released in France, Benelux..

A really interesting artist: we will tell you more in future posts!

Then, Calibro 35 will take us to their world of Italian Golden Age Soundtracks: Enrico Gabrielli on keys and horns, Massimo Martellotta on guitars, Luca Cavina on bass, Fabio Rondanini on drums, directed by Tommaso Colliva.. one of the most exciting live sets around!!

To end the night, another friend of Panoplie & d:qliq, official Luxembourg's dj for Calibro 35: Kustonbeater mixing until late night!!

We needed this 6 months break, but.. we're happy & excited to be back soon!!

And this is definitely a great comeback.. don't miss it!!

Sonic Visions: Heike has the Giggles

Hello PanoPeople!!

Always talking about Sonic Visions, the third and last (but not least) Italian band we tell you about is Heike has the Giggles.

Though really young (between 20 and 21!!), the trio lead by Emanuela Drei (vocals & guitar) has spent almost 3 years on the road touring around.
No doubt they are one of the biggest surprises of Italian rock, this year!!
And they're gonna be a big surprise at Rockhal, no doubt about it..

They will finally release their debut album, Sh, at the beginning of 2010.
These days, they're recording the clip of the first single, Robot, in Berlin.

Their style? As usual, we prefer to let you judge by yourself.

A good occasion for a chat with Raf and Berardo, and another special guest, Alessandro Ceccarelli, aka Cecca, Mr Estragon. And, maybe.. a little acoustic session?

Sonic Visions: Julie's Haircut

Hello PanoPeople!!

Here we are to tell you, and show you, more of another band of Sonic Vision.

Julie's Haircut are definitely one of Italy’s most interesting alternative rock bands and playing live is really in their nature.

Their style, which is somewhere between Primal Scream and Kasabian, has been tailored to transcend to a higher level once it’s being played live on stage.

Their last, double album is called Our secret ceremony and was released this year on A Silent Place.

Again, to let you judge by yourself, here you have a couple of videos.

First, the video for the song Sleepwalker, directed by Luca Lumaca, 2008. The video is the result of an experiment made possible thanks to the collaboration of many friends and fans that made their MacBooks available on a sunny sunday afternoon in march. The video was filmed exclusively by 12 isight webcam by Apple placed around the band.

Then a live version of The Shadow, Our Home (from the latest album), on the beach in Cesenatico, July 4th, 2009.
